The promise of AI to revolutionise enterprise operations is clear. Yet, as we push beyond pilot projects into widespread adoption, a new set of complexities emerges. Integrating Large Language Models (LLMs) and other AI applications into the sprawling landscape of existing enterprise systems, with their myriad APIs and diverse data sources, quickly becomes a significant hurdle. This is where the Model Context Protocol (MCP) steps in, aiming to standardise this integration and unlock true enterprise-wide AI scalability.

This is the first in a three-part series where we'll delve into the challenges of scaling AI integrations and how a strategic approach to MCP can provide a robust solution. In this initial post, we’ll demystify MCP and highlight the fundamental problems it seeks to address for organisations.

What is the Model Context Protocol (MCP)?

At its core, MCP is a standardisation layer designed to facilitate seamless communication between AI applications (like LLMs) and external services, such as internal tools, databases, and existing enterprise systems. Think of it as establishing a common protocol or a universal language for your AI applications.

Before MCP, integrating an LLM with various enterprise APIs often meant developing bespoke connectors for each specific interaction. This led to a fragmented, inefficient, and highly custom approach. MCP aims to standardise the way LLMs call different APIs, providing a common interface for executing functions, and handling contextual prompts.

In a typical MCP setup, an AI application acts as an MCP Client. This client sends requests, often formulated by an LLM, to one or more MCP Servers. Each MCP server is specifically designed to expose a particular backend API or service in a standardised way, making that service "pluggable" to the LLM. So, instead of configuring each specific API for an LLM to call individually, we standardise the way these different APIs are invoked via MCP.

However, this architecture introduces its own set of security considerations. Both the MCP server itself and the underlying backend API it connects to require robust protection, necessitating proper authentication (Authn) and authorisation (Authz) mechanisms. Furthermore, AI applications need to securely store credentials and manage user consents for each integration they perform.

The Problem: When Scaling AI Hits a Wall

While MCP offers a promising vision, its widespread adoption without a cohesive strategy can quickly lead to significant challenges for enterprises. These problems manifest across three critical perspectives: scaling, developer experience, and user trust.

As more and more AI applications begin to leverage MCP for integration, the system can rapidly become unmanageable. We often see duplicated MCP servers, with different development teams building their own unique integrations and implementations. This lack of a unified approach leads to:

  • Redundancy and Inefficiency
    Multiple teams reinventing the wheel, building similar MCP servers for the same backend systems.
  • Maintenance Nightmares
    A sprawling, inconsistent landscape of integrations that is difficult to monitor, update, and secure.
  • Increased Attack Surface
    Each independently developed and managed MCP server represents a potential vulnerability point.

The Developer Challenge

From a developer's standpoint, the current state of MCP adoption can be a real pain point:

  • Duplication of Implementations
    Developers are constantly faced with the need to build or adapt MCP code, leading to significant wasted effort and inconsistent quality across the organisation.
  • Focus Distraction
    Developer time is frequently diverted to the complexities of MCP integration and its associated security concerns, rather than focusing on the core business logic and innovation that their AI applications are meant to deliver.
  • Authentication & Authorisation Overhead (Server)
    Managing server-side authentication and authorisation for numerous individual MCP servers introduces substantial complexity and operational overhead. Each server needs its own security configuration, leading to fragmentation.
  • Authentication & Authorisation Overhead (Tools)
    Integrating and securing development tools with these diverse MCP setups also requires additional effort, further slowing down development cycles.
  • Credential & Consent Management Burden
    Developers often bear the burden of finding secure ways to store and manage user credentials and consent information for each AI application's integration, a task fraught with security and compliance risks.

The User Challenge

Ultimately, the fragmented approach to AI integration impacts the end-user experience, eroding trust and hindering effective adoption:

  • Unclear Credential Management
    Users are frequently left in the dark about which specific AI applications hold their sensitive credentials, leading to a sense of unease and a lack of control.
  • Ambiguous Consent Tracking
    It becomes unclear to users precisely which AI applications have been granted consent to act on their behalf and for what purposes. This opacity makes it difficult to understand the scope of data access.
  • Lack of Access Visibility
    Users lack a clear, centralised view into which AI applications are currently accessing their data or interacting with their systems (e.g., pulling data from a CRM or finance system).
  • Difficulty in Revoking Access
    When users wish to revoke an AI application's access, there's often no straightforward, unified method. Each application typically has its own unique, often cumbersome, management process.
  • Backend System Credential Changes Break Everything
    Perhaps one of the most frustrating user experiences is when a change in credentials for an underlying backend system (e.g., a password update for a CRM) breaks all AI integrations relying on it, requiring individual reconfigurations for each application.
